After concluding her journey with Ash and Brock, Dawn returns home and has to decide which of her Pokémon to take with her on her journey to become a Top Coordinator. The morning after, Johanna goes to Dawn's bed and tries to wake her up, only to find that Dawn had already woken up. Johanna goes outside to check if Dawn is there, and sees that Dawn is practicing with Cyndaquil. Cyndaquil uses a Swift and Flame Wheel combination which impresses Johanna. Piplup tells Cyndaquil that he does a better job, and they start fighting each other. Dawn had to step in and break it up. Johanna suggests to Dawn that have a practice Contest Battle. Glameow and Umbreon begin the battle by doing a Swift and Shadow Ball combination, while Piplup and Cyndaquil respond with a Swift and Bubble Beam combination. Johanna is very impressed by their combination. Glameow uses Fake Out on Piplup to make him flinch. Johanna lets Dawn know that she is impressed by their combinations that they worked hard on. Cyndaquil and Piplup show off a new Contest move that they have been working on. Piplup uses Whirlpool while Cyndaquil uses Flame Wheel which create a cool shiny rotating ball effect. The move does not work properly when they try to open it up to create a sparkling effect, and the Pokémon fall to the ground. Piplup and Cyndaquil blame each other and once again begin fighting, leading Dawn and Johanna to decide to call the battle off.
Hikari - Setting Off on a New Journey!
Dawn explains to her mother that they have been practicing hard, but now feels she should start another journey. Johanna tells Dawn that, although she will obviously miss her daughter, it was probably a good idea to start travelling and learning on the road again. Dawn tells her mother that she has already decided on her next destination: the Hoenn region, the birthplace of Pokémon Contests, as well as the home region of Contest Master Wallace. However Dawn is torn over another important issue; although she had originally decided to begin a fresh start in Hoenn and take only Piplup, she feels through training with her other Pokémon that she still needs to bring out their full strength, so doesn't know who to take and who to leave with Professor Rowan. Izzy and Cara arrive and ask Dawn how she has been doing since it had been a long time since they've seen each other. They both hand Dawn some vegetables to take with her on her journey.
Back at home, Dawn notices that her bag is moving and Cyndaquil pops out indicating that it wants to go with Dawn on her journey. Dawn admits to her mom that she is still undecided, and her mom suggests that she go see Professor Rowan and ask him for advice. On her way to the Pokémon lab, Cyndaquil and Piplup continue fighting and Dawn tells them that they must stop. Meanwhile, at the lab Professor Rowan and his assistants are doing a health check on a Shuckle, Starly, Kricketot, Shinx, Budew, and Cherubi. All of the Pokémon pass the health checks. Dawn arrives and asks Professor Rowan for advice about who to take with her on her journey to the Hoenn region. Professor Rowan tells her that there is a young lady that is having trouble making a decision of her own with which starter Pokémon to choose.
At the lab, Shinko tells Dawn and Professor Rowan that she has decided to study the starter Pokémon some more before making her decision on which Pokémon to choose. Dawn tells Professor Rowan that she has decided to bring all of her Pokémon with her on her journey to the Hoenn region to allow her to bring out their full power and form stronger bonds with all of them. Dawn boards a boat and waves good-bye to everyone as she heads off to the Hoenn region and new adventures.
After finishing an important photo shoot for her Buneary, Dawn is at her home in Twinleaf Town so she can train and think about her next move as a coordinator. Dawn decides to go on another journey but this time is planning to go to Hoenn and compete in the contests there. However, Dawn is unsure to take just Piplup or all her Pokémon with her for her new journey.
After her journey with Ash ended, Dawn stays at Twinleaf Town. Her mother visits her room and moves the curtains to wake her up. Johanna reminds Dawn she has only been sleeping and removes the blanket, but finds Dawn's Piplup. Dawn, however, is training with her Cyndaquil, who uses Swift in a circle, then Flame Wheel inside the circle. Dawn commends Cyndaquil for this success, as does Johanna. Dawn greets her mom, who remembers Dawn did not use Cyndaquil for the second part of the Grand Festival. Dawn reminds her she used Togekiss and Piplup and was preparing to perform with those two. Cyndaquil is full of confidence, making Piplup annoyed and they start arguing. Dawn separates them, while Johanna proposes a friendly battle with her daughter, with Dawn accepting.
However, something happens as the combo move fails and Piplup and Cyndaquil fall down, then accuse each other of the failure. Johanna and Dawn see they can't continue the battle with these two arguing, even if Dawn wanted to go to the good part of the combo move. Dawn thinks she should head on another journey. Johanna thinks that would be a good idea, even if she'd get lonely in Twinleaf Town. Dawn already plans on going to Hoenn, the place where the Pokémon Contests were initiated and where Wallace lives. However, Dawn considered to going only with Piplup for basics, but seeing how much her other Pokémon have performed, she thinks she didn't bring out the most out of the others. Suddenly, they are visited by Izzy and Cara, who greet them. The couple is glad to see Dawn, for Barry already left. Dawn admits she is also planning on going off. Izzy considers it nice the young ones have so many dreams, even if Klara thinks they shouldn't rush. To support Dawn, Izzy offers his vegetables to her.
Later, Dawn sees there are too many vegetables for her to carry. She sees her bag shaking and finds Cyndaquil inside. Johanna thinks Cyndaquil overheard Dawn wanted to leave them and entered the bag to come with her. Johanna remembers Dawn did not visit Prof. Rowan, suggesting to talk to him. Dawn rides her bike off to Prof. Rowan's lab, who is checking some Pokémon with his assistants. Prof. Rowan congratulates Dawn on coming into the semi-finals of the Grand Festival. Dawn thanks Prof. Rowan, but asks which Pokémon should she choose to take with her, since she is going to another journey. Prof. Rowan replies he can't help her, for she understands her Pokémon better than he does. Dawn admits that is the truth, but she still cannot decide. Prof. Rowan replies she is young and has time to make the decision and remembers there is also someone else that wants to make a similar decision, in his lab.
Shinko does not know whether she should pursue Gyms or Contests. Dawn advises she should decide after she heads on her own journey. They soon encounter Chimchar on a tree and Piplup, who came out of the bushes. Piplup uses Bubblebeam, but Chimchar evades by swinging to other trees, so Piplup pursue is. Dawn's Piplup and Cyndaquil follow them and speed up to become faster than the other. Dawn and Shinko soon lose Piplup and Chimchar, but Dawn is determined not to give up. They hear terrified cries and investigate, finding Piplup and Chimchar stuck in a web made by Ariados. Cyndaquil uses Flame Wheel, igniting the web and freeing Chimchar and Piplup, even if the latter hits its head. Ariados uses Poison Sting on Shinko, so Cyndaquil takes the hit. Soon, they are all surrounded by more Ariados. Shinko and Dawn grab the Pokémon and run off. Ariados use String Shot and move forwards and attempt to stop Shinko and Dawn with Poison Sting.
Dawn thanks her Pokémon, as Prof. Rowan and his assistants arrive. At the lab, Rowan thanks Shinko and Dawn for rescuing the Pokémon. Shinko admits she has decided not to choose a Pokémon yet, wanting to learn more first. Dawn, however, has decided to bring all her Pokémon with her for a new journey. She is certain they all have special powers, which she has to see and unlock to become a Top Coordinator. Rowan is glad and wishes Dawn to do her best. Dawn, however, bids farewell to her mom, Shinko and Professor Rowan, as she leaves on a boat to Hoenn.
